Frequently ASked Questions

What grades do you offer?

WSA is launching as a microschool for the 2025-2026 school for Grades 3-8, year with plans to expand to a fully accredited private school through Grade 12 by Year 3.

Why does WSA have mixed age-groups?

WSA uses mixed-age groups to build community and encourage collaboration. Depending on the class, students may work in combined groups (Grades 3–8) or split groups (Grades 3–5 and 6–8). This flexible grouping allows students to learn with and from peers of different ages while receiving appropriate challenges and support.

does WSA have any religious affiliation?

No. We are secular and welcome families from all faiths and backgrounds.

What is a microschool?

A microschool is a small, community-based educational program that offers personalized learning in a flexible environment. Unlike traditional schools, microschools typically serve fewer students, allowing for deeper relationships, customized instruction, and hands-on learning experiences.

Is WSA a replacement for full-time school?

We offer both full-time and part-time enrollment options. All students, regardless of enrollment level, must be registered as homeschool students with their local school district in compliance with Virginia homeschooling laws. WSA operates as a microschool and is not a state-accredited private school for the 2025–2026 school year. Enrollment at WSA requires families to file a Notice of Intent to Homeschool with their district.

  • Full-Time Enrollment

    • Full-time students attend WSA for their complete academic program.

    • WSA provides year-end documentation of progress (narrative evaluations and portfolio summaries) to support the parent’s required annual progress submission to their school district.

    • Families remain responsible for filing their homeschool intent and any required testing or evaluation documentation with their district

  • Part-Time Enrollment
    • Part-time students attend WSA for enrichment or supplemental classes only.

    • WSA does not provide year-end documentation of progress for part-time students. Parents are responsible for tracking and reporting academic progress to meet homeschool requirements.

    • We encourage families to attend our Parent Information Meeting to learn more about how WSA supports both full-time and part-time learning pathways.

Will WSA provide grades, transcripts, or standardized testing?

Yes. All full-time and part-time students at WSA will receive formal grades and feedback on their learning. Families may also request transcripts at any time for their records or for future academic needs. More information about our assessment process, grading practices, and transcript requests will be available in our Family Handbook, which will be published on our website after June 15th. At this time, WSA does not administer standardized testing, but families are welcome to pursue independent testing as needed to meet Virginia’s homeschool requirements.

Who teaches at WSA?

WSA partners with experienced educators, artists, and professionals who are passionate about working with students in creative and meaningful ways.

Can students with IEPs or learning differences attend WSA?

WSA is not a therapeutic or special education program, but we strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment. Our small group sizes allow for flexible, student-centered learning, though families remain responsible for specialized services outside of WSA.

How does WSA handle behavior or discipline?

As a small community, WSA focuses on positive relationships, clear expectations, and collaborative problem-solving. We partner with families to address any behavioral concerns and ensure that our learning environment remains safe, respectful, and supportive for all students.

What makes WSA different from a co-op?

While homeschool co-ops are typically parent-led and volunteer-based, WSA hires experienced educators and professionals to design and teach interdisciplinary classes. We operate as a tuition-based program with a consistent weekly schedule, planned curriculum, and clear enrollment process.

What is expected of parents?

WSA values partnership with parents. Families are expected to:

  • Stay involved in their child’s learning at home.

  • Communicate openly with WSA teachers and staff.

  • Support community events and student projects when possible.
