Fairy Tales Study

Wednesdays
Ages 7-13
1:00-2:30PM
Instructor: Krista John

In this engaging class, students explore classic fairy tales through reading, discussion, writing, retellings, and creative art projects. We’ll compare familiar stories, study characters and settings, and play with story structure as students retell tales in their own words and create original responses to the texts. This fairy tale study is thoughtfully connected to our spring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, helping students recognize common fairy tale elements and themes that appear across stories and adaptations. Perfect for young readers and writers who love stories, imagination, and creative expression.

Much Ado About Nothing: Feb 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4
As You Like It: March 11, 18, 25, April 1

This literature-focused class invites students to explore Shakespeare’s comedies through guided reading, discussion, and creative exploration. Students will begin by reading Much Ado About Nothing, followed by As You Like It, studying language, characters, themes, and historical context while building confidence reading and understanding Shakespeare’s words.
As part of the class experience, students will attend a live professional production of As You Like It at the Richmond Shakespeare Festival in June or July 2026. Seeing the play performed on stage helps deepen comprehension and appreciation of Shakespeare as living literature, connecting the text students have studied to a real theatrical experience.

Page to Stage (our youth theatre program) is also considering producing a youth version of Much Ado About Nothing in May and June. More details coming soon!
