Fairy Tales Study

Wednesdays from 1:00-2:30PM

Instructor: Krista John

In this engaging class, students explore classic fairy tales through reading, discussion, writing, retellings, and creative art projects. We’ll compare familiar stories, study characters and settings, and play with story structure as students retell tales in their own words and create original responses to the texts. This fairy tale study is thoughtfully connected to our spring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, helping students recognize common fairy tale elements and themes that appear across stories and adaptations. Perfect for young readers and writers who love stories, imagination, and creative expression.

History on Stage
Power, Politics, and the Past Through Musical Theatre

Fridays from 10-11AM

Instructor: Krista John

Hamilton Feb 6, 13, 20, 27

Six: March 6, 13, 20, 27

In this eight-week history and humanities course, students will explore how modern musical theatre interprets and reimagines the past through two culturally significant shows: Hamilton and Six. Using songs, historical context, primary-source excerpts, and guided discussion, students will examine how history is shaped, retold, and sometimes challenged on stage.

During the first half of the course, students will study Hamilton, focusing on the American Revolutionary era, key historical figures, and the ways narrative, music, and perspective influence our understanding of history. We will explore questions of power, legacy, ambition, and whose stories are remembered.

The second half of the course will turn to Six, examining the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII and how contemporary storytelling reframes women’s voices, agency, and historical reputation.

This is an academic, discussion-based class rooted in history and critical analysis. Creative responses such as journaling, short writing, and visual projects may be used to support learning, but the course does not require acting or performance experience.

Tales from the BArd
Love, laughter, and mischief in Shakespeare

Wednesdays from 9:30-11AM

Instructor: Krista John

Much Ado About Nothing: Feb 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25, March 4

As You Like It: March 11, March 18, March 25, April 1

This literature-focused class invites students to explore Shakespeare’s comedies through guided reading, discussion, and creative exploration. Students will begin by reading Much Ado About Nothing, followed by As You Like It, studying language, characters, themes, and historical context while building confidence reading and understanding Shakespeare’s words.

As part of the class experience, students will attend a live professional production of As You Like It at the Richmond Shakespeare Festival in June or July 2026. Seeing the play performed on stage helps deepen comprehension and appreciation of Shakespeare as living literature, connecting the text students have studied to a real theatrical experience.

Page to Stage (our youth theatre program) is also considering producing a youth version of Much Ado About Nothing in May and June. More details coming soon!
